A Calcium test measures the level of calcium in your blood. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body, essential for bone health, muscle contraction, nerve signaling, blood clotting, and heart function.
What This Test Measures
Total Serum Calcium:
The total amount of calcium in blood, including calcium bound to proteins (mainly albumin) and free (ionized) calcium. About 99% of body calcium is in bones; the remaining 1% circulates in blood.
Reference Range
Normal: 8.5-10.5 mg/dL
Note: Results should be interpreted alongside albumin levels, as low albumin can falsely lower calcium readings.
Who Should Consider This Test
• Symptoms of calcium imbalance (muscle cramps, numbness, fatigue)
• Bone health evaluation
• Kidney disease monitoring
• Parathyroid disorder evaluation
• Cancer screening and monitoring
• Routine health screening
What Abnormal Calcium May Indicate
High Calcium (Hypercalcemia):
• Hyperparathyroidism (most common)
• Cancer (bone metastases, lung, breast)
• Excessive vitamin D
• Certain medications
• Prolonged immobilization
Symptoms: Fatigue, weakness, confusion, constipation, excessive thirst
Low Calcium (Hypocalcemia):
• Hypoparathyroidism
• Vitamin D deficiency
• Kidney disease
• Magnesium deficiency
• Malabsorption
Symptoms: Muscle cramps, numbness, tingling, irregular heartbeat
