Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Blood Work Lab Test

A Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test is used to measure the levels of FSH in the blood. FSH is a hormone that is primarily responsible for stimulating the growth and development of eggs in females and sperm in males. This test is commonly used to diagnose fertility problems in both men and women.

In women, an FSH test is often used to determine the cause of infertility, irregular menstrual cycles, or early menopause. High levels of FSH can indicate that the ovaries are not responding properly to the hormone, which may indicate a reduced ovarian reserve or premature ovarian failure. In men, an FSH test is often used to evaluate the cause of infertility, erectile dysfunction, or a decreased sex drive. Low levels of FSH can indicate that the testes are not producing enough sperm, which may be a sign of a hormonal imbalance or a genetic disorder.

In addition to diagnosing fertility problems, an FSH test may also be used to help diagnose certain pituitary gland disorders, such as hypopituitarism or pituitary tumors.
