A Reticulocyte Count measures the number of reticulocytes (immature red blood cells) in your blood. This test shows how quickly your bone marrow is producing and releasing new red blood cells.
What This Test Measures
Reticulocytes:
Young red blood cells that have just been released from the bone marrow. They mature into fully functional red blood cells within 1-2 days. The reticulocyte count indicates bone marrow activity and red blood cell production.
Reference Ranges
• Reticulocyte Percentage: 0.5-2.5% of red blood cells
• Absolute Reticulocyte Count: 25,000-125,000 cells/mcL
Who Should Consider This Test
• Evaluating the cause of anemia (bone marrow problem vs. blood loss vs. destruction)
• Monitoring response to treatment for anemia (iron, B12, folate, erythropoietin)
• After bone marrow transplant to assess recovery
• Evaluating hemolytic anemia (red blood cell destruction)
• Those receiving chemotherapy
Interpreting Results
High Reticulocyte Count:
• Blood loss (body making more cells to compensate)
• Hemolytic anemia (destruction being replaced)
• Response to anemia treatment (good sign)
Low Reticulocyte Count with Anemia:
• Bone marrow problem
• Nutritional deficiency (iron, B12, folate)
• Kidney disease (low erythropoietin)
• Aplastic anemia
