Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO Abs) are antibodies produced by the immune system that can attack the thyroid gland, leading to autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.
TPO Abs are often measured along with other thyroid function tests such as TSH, Free T3, and Free T4 to help diagnose and monitor autoimmune thyroid diseases. High levels of TPO Abs can indicate that the immune system is attacking the thyroid gland, leading to inflammation and damage.
In addition to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, high levels of TPO Abs have also been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, infertility, and thyroid cancer.
If you are experiencing symptoms of thyroid dysfunction such as fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, or difficulty concentrating, or if you have a family history of thyroid disease, your doctor may recommend a TPO Abs test along with other thyroid function tests to help diagnose and monitor thyroid conditions.
