Testosterone Injection Instructions
Step 1: Check Your Medication
• Review the label to confirm you have the correct medication.
• Look at the medication in the vial. Check for any color change, small pieces floating in the liquid, cloudiness, or any other irregularities.
Note: You can use the smaller gauge needle/syringes to draw and administer medication. Some will recommend a larger gauge needle(18 gauge or 21 gauge) needle to draw.
Step 2: Filling The Syringe With Medication:
- Clean the rubber stopper of the vial with alcohol.
- Hold the syringe in your hand like a pencil, with the needle pointed up.
- Pull back the plunger to the line on your syringe for your dose. This fills the syringe with air.
- Insert the needle into the rubber top. DO NOT touch or bend the needle.
- Push the air into the vial (This keeps a vacuum from forming)
- Turn the vial upside down and hold it up. Keep the needle tip in the medication.
- Pull back the plunger to the line on your syringe for your dose. For example, if you need 1 cc of medication, pull the plunger to the line marked 1 cc on the syringe, if the dose is 0.6 cc load to the first hashmark past the .05 cc hashmark, etc. Hashmarks are at every 0.1 cc.
Note: Some bottles of medication may say mL. One cc is the same amount as one mL of medication.
Step 3: Remove Air Bubbles From The Syringe:
• Keep the syringe tip in the medication, tap the syringe with your finger to move air bubbles to the top. Then push gently on the plunger to push the air bubbles back into the vial.
• If you have a lot of bubbles, push the plunger to push all the medication back into the vial. Draw medication out again slowly and tap air bubbles out. Double-check that you still have the right amount of medication drawn up
• Remove the syringe from the vial and keep the needle clean.
• At this time, if you used a larger needle to draw up the medication, twist this needle off and discard. Put the smaller injection needle on the syringe.
• If you plan to put the syringe down, put the cover back on the needle.
Step 4: Injection Procedure
• Clean the injection site with either an alcohol pad or rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or gauze. Clean in circular motion starting in the middle and working outward.
• Intramuscular injections: Hold the muscle firmly and insert the needle into the muscle at a 90-degree angle with a quick firm motion. You may release your grip on the muscle after the needle is completely inserted.
• SubQ injections (Subcutaneous, under the skin): Pinch 1.5-2 inches of skin and pull it away from the muscle, insert the needle into the tissue at 45-degree angle. Continue holding tissue away from the muscle until all medication has been injected. The 23 gauge, one inch, needle is not to be used for subQ injections. You will be using a smaller syringe and needle for subQ.
• Once all medication has been injected, you may withdraw the needle. Massage the injection site with a cotton ball, and apply a bandage if needed. Discard needles properly (sharp containers are available at local pharmacies or online).
